Identity Shifting

If I become what each person wants, I'm accepted everywhere. With no fixed self, there's no fixed target to reject.
What it's really guarding
Rejection of the authentic self, having to commit to who you really are, disappointing anyone. Underneath it all, what it protects is real: connection, acceptance, the ability to relate across difference.
How it shows up
What it is
Becoming a different version of yourself with different people. Mirroring others unconsciously. A thin or absent sense of a consistent self.
Serving you, or running you
Serving

Social flexibility and empathy that meets people where they are.

Running you

There's no one home: you become whoever the room wants and lose your own shape.

Why it came, and what it costs
Why it came
Shape-shifting avoided rejection in an environment where any stable self drew fire. Fluidity was camouflage.
What it costs you now
In lovePartners sense there is no one home to meet. Intimacy stalls because there is no consistent self to attach to. The chameleon feels lonely even when surrounded.
At workHard to develop a recognizable voice or stance. Adapts well but rarely leads. Others struggle to know what you actually stand for.
In the bodyOver-mobile face that mirrors whoever is present, low baseline postural tone (no settled shape), diffuse body boundaries, micro-mimicry of others' movements.
What it becomes
The two states
Clenched

Face fully mirrored, no features of its own, its shape unsettled.

Settled

Its own face emerges in the glass; it flexes without vanishing.

When it settles
A self that stays consistent while still flexing. You adapt without disappearing.
Befriend · the smallest move
State one true, small preference in a room that disagrees.

I can be one consistent person and still be welcome.
