What it's really guarding
Clean, shame-free desire (which would be more vulnerable), the underlying emptiness the loop briefly fills, the intimacy the secret keeps at bay. Underneath it all, what it protects is real: pleasure, desire, aliveness.
How it shows up
What it is
A compulsive behavior (around sex, food, spending, substances) where shame is fused with the thrill, so you keep staging the desire in the exact form that triggers shame. The thing gets obtained but never truly enjoyed (the "empty ghost"), so the loop has to repeat.

Why it came
When desire itself was shamed early, pleasure and shame got wired together, so the charge of transgression became the reward. The shame is not a side effect of the habit; it has become the fuel.
