What it's really guarding
Judgment, exposure of inadequacy, the shame of being fully seen and found wanting. Underneath it all, what it protects is real: safety from judgment, protection of a tender self.
How it shows up
What it is
Making yourself unnoticeable so there's nothing to judge or expose. In groups: going quiet, withholding contributions, becoming literally forgettable while physically present. In competence: feeling like a fraud and hiding the gap, avoiding the experts who could help because they might see you don't know. The hiding compounds the fear it's meant to soothe.

Why it came, and what it costs
Why it came
When being seen once meant being judged, shamed, or targeted, disappearing was safety. With no visible self, there's no target for rejection.
What it costs you now
| In love | Partners feel they can't find or reach you, that you're absent even when present. Intimacy requires being seen, which is exactly the exposure the pattern forbids. |
