What it's really guarding
Genuine attachment, the pain of unexpected loss, the vulnerability of surrendering to something uncertain. Underneath it all, what it protects is real: safety from abandonment, protection of the heart.

Ending relationships before they can end you, finding fatal flaws to justify leaving, assuming eventual abandonment and acting on it first.
beyond leaving first, the pattern runs childhood attention-getting strategies (anger, jealousy, perfectionism, cuteness) that once extracted attention as a love-substitute and now actively repel real love. "Wired together, fire together": if love was once paired with criticism or abuse, genuine love feels wrong and gets pushed away the moment it arrives.
