Counter-Dependence

Counter-Dependence / Reflexive Rebellion

No one tells me what to do. The moment something becomes an expectation, I want out, even if I wanted it five minutes ago.
What it's really guarding
Engulfment, domination, the loss of self that once came with compliance, the helplessness of being controlled. Underneath it all, what it protects is real: autonomy, freedom, selfhood.
How it shows up
What it is
Defining yourself by opposition. Reflexive "no" to instruction, authority, or expectation. Allergic to being told what to do, even when the request is reasonable or aligned with what you actually want. Contrarianism as identity.
Serving you, or running you
Serving

Sovereignty and the courage to question authority.

Running you

You reflexively refuse even what you want, just to not be told.

Why it came, and what it costs
Why it came
When authority was once controlling, intrusive, or unsafe, reflexive opposition protected autonomy and selfhood. Saying no, even against your own interest, proved you couldn't be controlled.
What it costs you now
In loveA partner's requests get heard as control and met with resistance, so collaboration curdles into a power struggle. The rebellion sacrifices genuine wants on the altar of not-being-told, leaving both people frustrated.
At workFriction with management and process, difficulty following through on agreed commitments, a tendency to undercut even good ideas because they arrived as a directive. Talent shadowed by a reputation for being difficult.
In the bodyA bracing, pushing-against quality, a reflexive stiffening when instructed, jaw and shoulders set against the directive. Sympathetic opposition that fires before the request is even evaluated.
What it becomes
The two states
Clenched

Planted and braced, refusing even what it wants.

Settled

Horns up rather than lowered, free to choose yes or no, sovereign instead of reactive.

When it settles
Chosen sovereignty. You say yes to what you want and no to what you don't, free of the reflex.
Befriend · the smallest move
Ask "do I not want this, or do I just not want to be told?"
