Escapism
Escapism / Fantasy-Retreat
“Anywhere but here. The real life starts after this part. One day it will all be different, and that's where I actually live.”
What it's really guarding
The disappointment of the present, the grief of how things actually are, the risk of testing the dream against reality and watching it lose. Underneath it all, what it protects is real: hope, possibility, relief from an unbearable now.
How it shows up
What it is
Living in the life that hasn't started yet. Daydream futures, elaborate plans, fantasy versions of self and circumstance, while the actual day goes unlived. The imagined elsewhere is always more vivid than the room.
Serving you, or running you
Serving
Vision, imagination, and the ability to see a better life before it exists.
Running you
The elsewhere eats the here, and the dreamed life replaces the lived one.
Why it came, and what it costs
Why it came
When the present was unbearable and couldn't be fought or fled in the body, the mind built an exit. Imagination became a portable elsewhere, a place the pain couldn't follow. The dreaming was survival.
What it costs you now
| In love | Partners sense they're sharing you with a parallel life. Presence keeps slipping toward the imagined version of the relationship, the imagined version of them. Real intimacy can't compete with a fantasy that never disappoints. |
| At work | The vision is rich and the execution starves. Planning replaces doing, the next idea replaces the current task, and the gap between imagined self and actual output becomes its own quiet shame. |
| In the body | Eyes drifting up and away, a soft unfocused gaze, weight floating off the feet, shallow upper-chest breath. A body half-departed, hard to find behind its own eyes. |
What it becomes
The two states
Clenched
Drifting up and away, gaze glazed toward a sky it never reaches, tethered to nothing, the dream-globes carrying it instead of the other way round.
Settled
It stands on the ground holding the globes lightly; the dreaming becomes vision it can build toward, and it visits elsewhere by choice and comes back.
When it settles
Grounded vision. The imagination stays, aimed at a future you actually build toward, visiting elsewhere by choice and coming back.
Befriend · the smallest move
When you notice the drift, name one thing in the room you can touch, then take one small real step toward the life you keep imagining.

“The life I keep imagining is asking to be built, not visited. Here is where it starts.”
