Future-Focused Anxiety

Future-Focused Anxiety

If I see it coming, it can't blow me apart. Worrying is how I keep us all safe.
What it's really guarding
Helplessness, being blindsided, the loss of the (illusory) control that worry provides. Underneath it all, what it protects is real: safety, preparedness, protecting what matters.
How it shows up
What it is
Living in the next problem, rehearsing worst cases, planning for catastrophe. The present moment is hard to actually inhabit.
Serving you, or running you
Serving

Foresight and preparation that catches real risk.

Running you

You live in the next catastrophe and are never actually here.

Why it came, and what it costs
Why it came
In an unpredictable environment, scanning ahead created the illusion of control and softened the shock of bad surprises. Vigilance was protective forecasting.
What it costs you now
In lovePartners feel a low hum of dread in the room and can never simply enjoy now. The anxious one is rarely present enough to be met.
At workCatastrophizes, over-prepares, struggles to commit because every choice is shadowed by what could go wrong. Decision fatigue and analysis paralysis.
In the bodyForehead and temple tension, gaze projected forward, clenched stomach, vibrating sympathetic charge. Present moment energetically vacant.
What it becomes
The two states
Clenched

Gaze fixed far ahead, the present body vacant and vibrating.

Settled

The gaze returns to the ground beneath it; it plans, then lands in now.

When it settles
Grounded foresight. You plan well, then return to the present where life is actually happening.
Befriend · the smallest move
Name three things you can see and feel right where you are.

I can meet what comes when it comes. I do not have to live there first.
