Chaos Addiction

Chaos Addiction

In chaos I know exactly who I am and what to do. Calm is the part right before something bad happens.
What it's really guarding
Intimacy with peace, the trauma and grief that surface in stillness, the terror of an ordinary quiet life. Underneath it all, what it protects is real: aliveness, competence, intensity.
How it shows up
What it is
Creating crisis when life goes calm, gravitating to drama, feeling most alive in emergencies, sabotaging peaceful stretches.
Serving you, or running you
Serving

The ability to thrive in crisis and stay sharp under pressure.

Running you

You manufacture emergencies because calm feels dangerous.

Why it came, and what it costs
Why it came
When chaos was childhood normal, the nervous system learned to function in it and to distrust calm as the lull before harm. Crisis is the familiar, navigable state.
What it costs you now
In lovePartners are exhausted by manufactured emergencies. Peaceful moments get sabotaged precisely when intimacy could deepen, because closeness in calm feels more dangerous than any crisis.
At workProcrastinates until things become urgent, creates unnecessary fires, burns out the team. Struggles with steady long-term work that lacks adrenaline.
In the bodyScattered electric charge, adrenaline as baseline, an inability to down-regulate, hypervigilant scanning. A live wire that cannot find safe discharge.
What it becomes
The two states
Clenched

Whipping in self-made wind, unable to settle.

Settled

It rests in still air and finds the stillness safe, still able to ride a real storm.

When it settles
Calm that's still alive. You can meet real crises and let peace be peace the rest of the time.
Befriend · the smallest move
Schedule twenty minutes of deliberate calm; ask what you fear about peace.

Peace is not the calm before the storm. Peace is allowed to just be peace.
